Interviewing Strategies

Congratulations. Your résumé and cover letter got you the interview for a position. The next step is to make a lasting impression on the employer to illustrate that you are the right candidate for their company.

Preparation

  • Know where your interview’s location is. Make sure to ask for building names, room numbers and whom you might be meeting with. Always remember to ask if there is anything in particular that you should bring to the interview.

  • Fully research the company and know the position that you are applying for.

  • Remember to bring extra copies of your résumé and cover letter and have a list of all your references available. 

  • Make sure to arrive 15 to 20 minutes before your scheduled interview. Always leave yourself extra traveling time to allow for any unforeseen circumstances.

  • Prepare for possible questions that you may be asked and have some questions prepared to ask during the interview.

  • Make an appointment with Alumni Career Services to have a practice interview.

During the Interview

  • Remain calm and poised. Be positive and upbeat.

  • Shake everyone’s hand and smile.

  • Be dressed to impress, regardless of the type of position that you are applying for. Always be dressed in professional, business attire.

  • Always give yourself a second before answering a question.

  • Answer each question fully, providing concrete examples.

  • Speak slowly, clearly and to the point.

  • Be yourself.

  • Ask about the interviewing process and when they hope to fill the position.

After the Interview

  • Send a hand written thank you note, card or e-mail that same day.

  • Restate your interest in this position and how much you want to work for their company.
