The Academic Center has carefully selected a number of professional tutors who are writing experts and will give each student support and careful instruction on all aspects of the writing process.
Shelly Auster, Ph.D.
Dr. Auster has been a tutor at SJC since
Fall 2011. She has a Ph.D. in English and teaches literature classes at
John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
Chris Barthel, Ph.D.
Dr. Barthel earned his Ph.D. in Modern European History at Brown University, where he also taught in the history department.
Thomas Carlisle
Thomas Carlisle has an M.F.A. in
Fiction Writing from Brooklyn College and an M.A. in Cinema Studies
from NYU. He has published several essays on film in the online journal
Reverse Shot. He has taught at Brooklyn College and is currently
teaching at Medgar Evers College.
David Fand
Mr. Fand is a graduate of Princeton and holds graduate degrees from Sarah Lawrence and Northwestern. He has taught writing and literature in New York area schools, including the Great Works program at CUNY Baruch. A multi-talented writer and performer, he has been a commissioned poet for New York City cultural events, and performed music and theater at substantial venues in New York.
Shivani Manghnani
Ms. Manghani has an M.F.A. in Fiction from
Columbia University. She has taught in the School of Professional and
Graduate Studies at SJC as well as at Hunter College. She is a published
writer and has won numerous awards for her work.
Kris Percival
Ms. Percival earned an M.S. in Education from
Hunter College and an M.F.A. in Screenwriting from Ohio University. Her
knitting books, published by Chronicle Books, have been praised in
publications ranging from O Magazine to The Wall Street Journal. She has
an extensive background in teaching as well as film production. She has
been a tutor at SJC since 2009.
Karyn Pilgrim
Karyn has taught at SJC for many years. She has a Ph.D. in English and also teaches at Empire State College.
Joseph Rogers
Joseph Rogers has been a tutor and instructor
at SJC since 2007. He has an M.F.A. (writing) from Brooklyn College and
has had work published in prominent magazines. He is also teaching at
St. Joseph’s and Brooklyn College.
