Policies and Procedures

Scheduling Guidelines

We offer half-hour appointments. You can call ahead (suggested) or walk-in but reservations are recommended. Students are limited to two appointments (breaks between appointments required) per day.

Scheduling Appointment on Website

  • Log into the website to view AC schedule: http://www.rich75.com/sjcny/

  • Be sure to choose “Brooklyn Campus” from the drop-down menu under Choose a Campus.

  • On the schedule page, again be sure to choose "Brooklyn Fall 2010" or "Brooklyn Accounting" from the drop-down menu.

  • White squares indicate open time slots for appointments with a writing tutor.

  • Sometimes, two tutors are available. Decide which one you’d like to make an appointment with.

Click on the white box to open the pop-up scheduling window

  • Indicate the length of your appointment (either 30 minutes or 1 hour); the instructor and course for which the assignment is due; and the particular issue you would like to work on during your visit.

  • Click “Save Appointment” at the bottom of the pop-up window.

  • If you cannot make the appointment, be sure to login and cancel the appointment by clicking on the appointment square. At the bottom of the pop-up window, check the box that indicates you want to cancel this appointment, then click "Save Changes".

Proofreading Papers

The Academic Center does not provide a proofreading service. The aim of the Center is for tutors to teach students, not simply make corrections. Thus, tutors will not correct every basic error, but they will teach students how to edit by themselves. While tutors will help students to generate, synthesize, and express their ideas, tutors may not be able to assist with specific subject knowledge within each paper.

Working with the Tutors

Tutors will work with students to develop the most effective style and structure for their work. Please keep in mind that there are infinite approaches to style and structure, and each tutor may handle these points differently. Students are free to work with several tutors to obtain different perspectives, or to make appointments with the same tutor.

If students make appointments with different tutors, they must be sure to bring in any drafts of papers that have been worked on as well as original assignment sheets from the class instructor.

Additionally, to make the job of the tutor easier and to fully utilize the time spent with the tutor, students should make sure they complete all parts of the appointment form on www.rich75.com/sjcny when making an appointment.

Food and Drink

No food allowed. Drinks are permitted away from computers.

Cell Phones

Turn them off during appointments. Use a quiet setting and take calls in the hallway at other times.

Computer and Printing

Printing is permitted on a limited basis. Long articles and papers cannot be printed in the center. Computer labs are available throughout the campus.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Academic Center Director Janine Latham at 718.940.5859 or jlatham@sjcny.edu.
