SJC Professor Named Senior Member of IEEE

PATCHOGUE, NY – OCTOBER 3, 2011 – St. Joseph’s College is pleased to announce that S. Jane Fritz, professor of mathematics and computer science on the Long Island Campus, has been named a Senior Member of The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Inc. (IEEE), the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.

“It comes as no surprise that S. Jane has been named a Senior Member of IEEE,” said S. Loretta McGrann, provost. “S. Jane began our computer science program on the Long Island Campus and has nurtured its growth. In addition, she has helped the College become a recipient of three National Science Foundation grants for students who major in mathematics, computer science and the physical sciences. Her contributions to the field, the College and the community are extensive. This honor is well-deserved."

IEEE is a members-only association for individuals who by education or experience, give evidence of competence in an IEEE-designated field, such as engineering, computer sciences and information technology, physical sciences, biological and medical sciences, mathematics, technical communications, education, management, law and policy. Members of IEEE can access individual society memberships and subscriptions, connect with local sections and volunteer leadership, and find upcoming conferences.

Becoming a Senior Member requires experience as an engineer, scientist, educator, technical executive or originator in IEEE-designated fields, having been in professional practice for at least 10 years and showing significant performance over a period of at least five of those years.

"This is a great acknowledgment of the role women play in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and I hope it will inspire other women to consider careers in these fields,” said S. Jane Fritz.

An active member of the Association for Computing Machinery and the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges, S. Jane also serves as vice president for the Long Island Chapter of the Computer Science Teachers Association and is a member and moderator of the SJC Chapter of Upsilon Pi Epsilon International Honor Society for the Computing and Information Disciplines. An elected fellow of the Science Teachers Association of New York State, S. Jane currently resides in West Islip, NY.
