PATCHOGUE, NY – NOVEMBER 9, 2011 – St. Joseph’s College is pleased to welcome guest speaker Rosalind Wiseman to the counseling workshop, “Queen Bees and Wannabees: Teaching Social Competency in Middle and High School Students,” on December 6 at 9 a.m. at the Islandia Marriott in Islandia, NY. Ms. Wiseman is an internationally recognized expert on children, teens, parenting, bullying, social justice and ethical leadership.
Author of the best-selling book, Queen Bees and Wannabees: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and the New Realities of Girl World, upon which the movie Mean Girls was based, Ms. Wiseman will present on the same topic to members of the school counseling community. This workshop is one of a number of professional development opportunities offered by St. Joseph’s College for school counselors and administrators. Past workshops have focused on issues involving gang violence, drug abuse, self-injury and cyber-bullying.
“Each year at our counselor events we ask for school counselors to suggest topics they deal with every day. Bullying was, sadly, the most requested speaking topic,” said Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management Gigi Lamens. “We hope that the event will provide counselors with new tactics and tools to combat this serious issue and create a safer environment for each student.”
This year’s annual professional development workshop, hosted by Office of Admissions at St. Joseph’s College, will provide common sense strategies and positive ways to combat the serious problem of bullying in schools.
Rosalind Wiseman is also the author of Queen Bee Moms and Kingpin Dads and the young adult novel Boys, Girls, & Other Hazardous Materials. She has been featured on the Today Show and Anderson Cooper and has been profiled in The New York Times, People, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, USA Today, Oprah, Nightline, CNN and Good Morning America. Ms. Wiseman holds a B.A. in political science from Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA. She lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband and two sons.
