SJC Adds Two New Tracks to Criminal Justice Major

PATCHOGUE, NY – FEBRUARY 6, 2012 – The Department of Criminal Justice at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that the Long Island Campus now offers five separate and unique criminal justice tracks leading to a B.A. or B.S. degree in Juvenile Justice, Mental Health, Law and Justice, Community Corrections, and Technology and the Criminal Justice System.

While the criminal justice major has been offered on both the Long Island and Brooklyn campuses since 2006, the addition of the two new tracks, Community Corrections and Technology and the Criminal Justice System, will give students a broader understanding of the criminal justice field. The courses are taught by expert-level professionals and emphasize the inner workings of police, courts and correctional systems in the United States, as well as the philosophies of punishment, rehabilitation and restoration, and the ethical codes of behavior.

“The criminal justice field is exciting and appealing to every kind of thinker,” said Barbara Morrell, Ph.D., and professor of criminal justice on SJC’s Long Island Campus. “The field is experiencing great change while emerging with new programs and technologies that will create career opportunities on multiple levels.”

Required courses include Law Enforcement, Corrections, Criminology, Political and Civil Rights and Research Methods in Criminal Justice, as well as a senior-year internship in the criminal justice field. Recent graduates have entered professions such as police and security officers, probation and parole officers, corrections officers, juvenile case workers and mental health counselors.
