BROOKLYN AND PATCHOGUE, NY – FEBRUARY 28, 2012 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) was recently named to G.I. Jobs Magazine’s list of Military-Friendly Schools for 2012. SJC, a participating member of the Service Members Opportunity Colleges (SOC), was also included in the Military Advanced Education 2012 Guide to Top Military-Friendly Colleges & Universities, a journal of higher learning for today’s service member.
“We are very excited to be listed as one of the top military-friendly schools in G.I. Jobs Magazine and Military Advanced Education,” said Shannon O’Neill, assistant dean for the School of Professional and Graduate Studies at St. Joseph’s College. “It is an honor to service those who have served our country, and we try to do as much as we can to assist our military students and assure success in achieving their educational goals.”
G.I. Jobs Magazine, a publication for military personnel who are transitioning back into civilian life, created a list of approximately 1,000 colleges, universities and trade schools, out of the 7,000 nationwide, to represent the 15 percent that are the most military-friendly. Criteria included the measure of education, value and benefits at each institution. The score for each school was tabulated using 45 percent for non-financial efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, 35 percent for financial commitment to recruiting and retaining military personnel, 15 percent for success in recruiting and retention and 5 percent for academic accreditations.
"I take all of my classes at night and on weekends so I am able to balance my responsibilities with school, family and military obligations,” said Sgt. 1st Class, U.S. Army Christopher Dash ’13. “The administrative staff, faculty and advisors were all very receptive to me as a new student and helped me through the transition."
At SJC, where there are almost 150 military-connected students between the two campuses, there are a number of supportive and knowledgeable military-friendly advisors ready to assist and guide applicants into degree programs that best fit their needs. SJC courses are also offered at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn and Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island. On the Long Island Campus, Blue Stars and Yellow Ribbons, a faculty and staff group, works with the Long Island State Veterans Home and the Northport VA to get students involved in volunteer projects at these facilities.
