SJC Hosts Second Annual Psychology Alumni Experience Seminar

PATCHOGUE, NY – MARCH 27, 2012 – The Department of Psychology and the Office of Alumni Relations at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) recently hosted a panel of alumni at a seminar for current students that explored how to be successful in graduate school and various professions in the field of psychology.

The panel consisted of five SJC alumni, each of whom earned a B.A. in Psychology and later pursued graduate degrees in a psychology-related field from other local universities. The panelists were selected to represent different types of programs, such as school psychology, mental health counseling, social work, research, graduate schools in the region and a variety of current work or internship situations.

“I speak on behalf of all of my colleagues in the Department of Psychology when I say that we are very proud of these alumni,” said Diane Sherlip, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Psychology on the Long Island Campus. “It was both heart-warming and gratifying to see what hard-working professionals our alumni have become since graduating from SJC. They are excellent representatives of the College and the values we hope to instill in our students.”

A goal of the Department of Psychology at SJC is to prepare students for a multitude of careers while broadening their personal understanding of human behavior. Fieldwork and internships give students experience in clinical practice and psychological research. Graduates of the program can be found in fields ranging from psychiatry and counseling, to advertising.

“The success of any alumni program is rooted in the relationships that are built in the classroom between our faculty and students,” said Matthew Colson, director of alumni relations and stewardship on the Long Island Campus. “At St. Joseph's College, we are blessed to have a faculty that is truly vested in the outcomes of our students and who continue life-long relationships with our alumni. Having the faculty on board, as we do in the Department of Psychology, makes all the difference when building alumni-student relationships.”
