In an effort to raise money for the group’s 2013 alternative spring break trip, members of the club will join together on campus in an effort to sell secondhand items to students, faculty, staff and the College community. Collections of donated items to sell at the fundraiser will take place from now until the day of the sale.
“A common thread between many Habitat for Humanity affiliates is that a lot of them have resale stores,” said Assistant to the Dean of Students and Club Advisor, Bryan Gill, M.S., M.B.A. “This is our chance to have a resale store for a day. The Habitat for Humanity garage sale is a great benefit to the club and to the community. The event is for charity, but it helps everyone involved.”
Last year, through many successful fundraising efforts, the club was able to collect enough money to travel to Oxnard, California to participate in its seventh spring break Collegiate Challenge Build, where they were able to assist AmeriCorps volunteers on two Habitat for Humanity builds.
“Our goal is to raise more money than we did at the last sale, where we raised over $1,000,” said senior student Jill Hamill, president of the St. Joseph’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity. “The club has to raise almost all of the money needed for this year’s alternative spring break trip on its own, so we need to hold many fundraisers. The sale is always a lot of fun and we are hoping a lot of people come down to support Habitat.”
The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the John A. Danzi Athletic Center on the Long Island Campus, located at 155 West Roe Boulevard, Patchogue, New York. In the event of rain, the sale will be held in the Multipurpose Room of the John A. Danzi Athletic Center.
Habitat for Humanity seeks to eliminate impoverished housing conditions and homelessness by making affordable housing a matter of conscience and action. Habitat for Humanity enables the St. Joseph’s College community to meet, build houses and increase awareness of the poverty that exists in communities all over the country. Since the club is open to all, it serves as a great way to make new friends and get involved at the College, as well as giving back through community service.
