PATCHOGUE, NY – March 5, 2013 – The Office of Alumni Relations and the Long Island Alumni Association at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) are pleased to announce that they will be honoring Thomas Travis, Ph.D., vice president for planning and dean of the School of Professional and Graduate, at the College’s upcoming Graduate Management Studies Networking Dinner on Tuesday, March 26.
Dr. Travis will be awarded the Thomas A. Doherty Award for Business Ethics to commemorate his career at SJC and celebrate his upcoming retirement. Named for Thomas A. Doherty, former chairman and trustee at SJC for over 20 years, the award was established by his family and friends after his passing in 2007, and recognizes a person or organization that demonstrates special dedication or an innovative approach to ethics.
“Dr. Travis’s vision created the Graduate Management Studies program,” said Mary Chance, director and assistant professor of business administration and accounting in the Office of Graduate Management Studies at SJC. “It has been a pleasure working with him and his leadership and management style truly exemplify the philosophy of the program.”
Throughout his 30-year career at SJC, Dr. Travis was responsible for the development of new and viable programs for the adult student population and created several graduate degree and advanced certificate programs with an emphasis on improving graduate students’ managerial effectiveness in the workplace. Under his leadership, the M.S. in Management, Executive M.B.A., M.B.A. in Accounting and M.B.A. in Health Care Management programs were accredited. An expert in adult education, Dr. Travis structured these programs to allow students the opportunity to apply course concepts to workplace issues.
Dr. Travis serves as coordinator of the SJC scholarship program for Nicaraguan children and is a board member of The CSJ Learning Connection for Adult Education, a private, non-profit educational program sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, N.Y. He resides in Sayville with his wife Barbara.
