PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – MAY 8, 2013 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it will host the annual Suffolk County Golden Games, an athletic competition among senior citizens, on Friday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the John A. Danzi Athletic Center located on the College’s Long Island Campus in Patchogue, N.Y.
Founded in 1989 by Karen Nash, director of therapeutic recreation at Gurwin Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, the annual event brings residents from 13 Suffolk County nursing home facilities together to compete in physical activities, such as wheelchair relay, balloon volleyball, basketball throw, distance throw and bowling. The games open with an Olympic-style ceremony and salute to the American flag. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded for all events.
“The Suffolk County Golden Games Association promotes more than just medals for our participants,” said Linda Schoepfer, director of Therapeutic Recreation at Westhampton Care Center and Suffolk County Golden Games board member. “This event is an all-around positive experience that provides competitive energy, pride in doing one’s personal best, inspiration to others, confidence from achievement, fitness, friendship and fun.”
