BROOKLYN AND LONG ISLAND, NY – September 10, 2013 - St. Joseph’s College (SJC) was once again recognized by two prestigious publications as an outstanding college in the region under the category of ‘America’s Best Colleges.’ For more than a decade, SJC has been consistently named as one of the nation’s top colleges by U.S. News & World Report — this year placing it in the top third of the region in its 2014 rankings of Best Colleges — while Forbes Magazine ranked the College in the top half of institutions nationwide in its online issue of ‘America’s Best Colleges’ for the seventh consecutive year.
“St. Joseph’s consistently ranks among the top four-year private colleges as listed in U.S. News & World Report and Forbes, because we offer stellar academics, innovative programs and personal support while keeping our tuition reasonable,” said SJC President S. Elizabeth Hill, C.S.J., J.D. “Our approach, with its emphasis on small class sizes and creating an environment in which our students can thrive academically and personally, enables us to provide an honors-style education at a manageable cost to all, that will prepare them for successful careers within four years.”
With campuses in Brooklyn and Long Island, SJC jumped up 38 spots in the Regional Universities – North category by U.S. News & World Report, which bases its annual rankings on graduation and retention rate, faculty resources, selectivity, graduation rate performance alumni giving rate, financial stability and the assessment of each school from its peers. SJC’s strong freshman retention rate and continuing dedication to highly personalized instruction, which is reflected in the 15:1 faculty/student ratio and small class sizes, helped secure the institution’s place in the top-third of all institutions surveyed. This year’s rankings of Regional Universities, which offer a full range of undergraduate and graduate degrees, but only a few doctoral programs, are split into the four regions of the country.
For this year’s listing, Forbes Magazine addressed the rapidly changing landscape in higher education. Rather than focus on the factors that get a student into college, Forbes focused on what students receive when enrolled at a particular institution. Student satisfaction, post-graduate success, student debt, graduation rate and the number of nationally-competitive awards secured were all taken into account while compiling these rankings.
