SJC Hosts Second Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – MAY 7, 2014 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that more than 75 students participated in its second annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on Friday, May 2 on the College’s Long Island Campus. The Symposium offered students from all disciplines an opportunity to share and celebrate their scholarly and creative accomplishments with the entire SJC community. 

“We had a remarkable symposium with 75 student presentations and hundreds of guests,” said Dominique Treboux, Ph.D., director of undergraduate research and associate professor of psychology at SJC. “The conference was buzzing with activity demonstrating the vigor of  academic life at St. Joseph’s across many disciplines. It is remarkable what can be accomplished with bright, motivated students and dedicated faculty.” 

Sponsored by all SJC academic departments, students presented research papers, art exhibitions and posters that were completed as part of an independent study, honors project, research project or other analytical activity. The wide variety of presentations included in-depth studies on topics such as cell cycle arrest of bladder cancer, cell phone effects on family cohesion, effects of endocrine disruption chemicals on development, stress responses to Superstorm Sandy, gender stereotypes, mathematics in music, restoration of the Patchogue Lake and computer crimes. 

The event was attended by more than 280 members of the College community and  featured a keynote address titled “Examining Dynamic Interactions Across Cultures: The Science of Language Development” by Lisa Tafuro, Ph.D., assistant professor in SJC’s Department of Communication Studies.
