St. Joseph’s College and the United Nations (UN) Major Group for Children and Youth Habitat are pleased to announce that they will co-host a youth consultation on Wednesday, May 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium on SJC’s Brooklyn Campus. At this event, youth from across New York City will convene to identify and discuss issues that impact them in preparation for the Habitat III Conference for Sustainable Urban Development and Housing in Quito, Ecuador in October 2016.
“The youth consultation is a real-world opportunity to participate in the UN’s non-governmental system—students will have an opportunity to give feedback to the UN system about life in an urban setting,” said S. Susan Wilcox, C.S.J., director of the Office of Campus Ministry on the Brooklyn Campus. “This information will be incorporated into a larger report by UN Habitat, the UN's office on urban development to be discussed in late 2016.”
This event aims to meet the challenges presented by the huge shift in the global populace into urban areas. Inadequate housing, lack of infrastructure and a widening global income inequality gap are a few of the challenges facing youth in urban areas across the world. This consultation is one of many being held internationally to identify the most pressing issues that confront urban youth and work toward their resolution in order to foster social inclusion and maximize human development.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information about this event, contact S. Susan Wilcox at 718.783.7475.
