SJCNY and Stony Brook Children’s Hospital Collaborate for School Intervention and Re-Entry Program

August 02, 2017 LI

Patchogue, N.Y. – August 2, 2017 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) and Stony Brook Children’s Hospital’s School Intervention and Re-Entry Program (SIRE) are collaborating to help students transition out of the Stony Brook Child Life Program and into college, while accommodating each of the student’s specific needs.

Internationally recognized, the Stony Brook SIRE program helps children and young adults with chronic illnesses achieve their academic goals by providing a number of support services. The SIRE program includes doctors, nurses and child-life specialists who work with the patients and also their families, teachers and school administrators. Representatives from SJC will be included in the preparation for any students who wish to pursue college coursework at SJC Long Island.

This collaboration was created through SJC alumna Cara Giannillo ’89, coordinator for the School Intervention and Re-Entry Program at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, and the Office of Alumni Engagement at SJC Long Island, to ensure students are aware of the accommodations a local college can make to adhere to their academic and social requirements.

“The Office of Alumni Engagement has worked with Cara extensively in both mentoring and community outreach capacities,” said Taryn Kutujian, associate director of alumni engagement at SJC Long Island. “As Cara's alma mater, we are proud to support her incredibly meaningful work and hope to further develop our collaboration with the Stony Brook Child Life Program.”

In June 2017, students, parents and guardians, and staff members from SIRE visited SJC Long Island for an exclusive information session and campus tour. Representatives from SJC’s offices of Enrollment Management, Career Development and Engagement, Alumni Engagement, the Counseling and Wellness Center, and the Advisement Center were on hand to offer information and answer questions from all areas of student life. This fall, students and their families will visit SJC a second time to experience campus life.
