SJC to Welcome Rory Kennedy

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – March 24, 2017 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy will present her lecture, “The Camera Doesn’t Lie: Social Change through Documentary Filmmaking,” for the College’s 2017 Presidential Lecture series on Tuesday, April 25 at 1 p.m. at SJC Brooklyn and Wednesday, April 26 at 1 p.m. at SJC Long Island.

“We are thrilled to welcome Rory Kennedy as our keynote speaker, and grateful to the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation for supporting this year’s Presidential Lecture,” said Carrie Bhada, vice president for institutional advancement at SJC. “Ms. Kennedy's work explores today's greatest challenges and her lecture is an opportunity for our campus and community to explore these issues from many perspectives. Her commitment to social justice is in keeping with our mission and she is a great fit for this important event.” 

Kennedy is one of America’s most prolific documentary filmmakers, award-winning director and producer. Her work deals with poverty, political corruption, domestic abuse, drug addition, human rights and mental illness, and she has made more than 30 highly acclaimed documentaries, including the Academy Award® nominated Last Days in Vietnam. Kennedy’s films have appeared on HBO, PBS, Lifetime Television, A&E, Court TV, The Oxygen Network and TLC, and her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times. 

Kennedy is a governor of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and alumna of Brown University. Along with acclaimed documentary filmmaker Liz Garbus, she is co-founder of Moxie Firecracker Films in New York. Kennedy maintains an active speaking schedule for lectures, university events and community organizations. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and three children.
