Preparing the next generation of nurses to be future leaders in health care.
The ways in which nurses were educated during the 20th century are no longer adequate for dealing with the realities of healthcare in today’s fast-paced, high-tech world of medicine. Many institutions now require registered nurses to hold a bachelor’s degree for this reason. Given the increasing healthcare demands of our population, experts predict that, by 2020, the U.S. will need 1.2 million more professionally qualified nurses than our country is currently preparing. At St. Joseph’s College, our mission is to help curb that shortage by expanding our highly regarded RN-BS program for professional nurses and offering a 4-year, BS program for undergraduates.
“Research shows that the shortage of nurses is a critical concern for healthcare, for our communities and for the nation. The Department of Nursing is committed to meeting the need for baccalaureate nurses through our undergraduate programs. Our expert faculty and comprehensive curriculum will prepare you to assume a leadership role in healthcare.”
— Maria Fletcher, Ph.D., R.N., C.N.E, Associate Professor and Director
The Mission of the Department of Nursing is to provide professional nursing education at the undergraduate level that develops and supports a learner-centered environment that ignites a spirit of inquiry and a commitment to lifelong learning and reflective practice. The program supports active engagement in multiple ways of knowing, while integrating nursing knowledge, related sciences, and the humanities to refine nursing practice.
Through the intentional use of transformational experiences across the curriculum, the development of professional and personal identity in the ways of knowing and being is emphasized. In this way, the Nursing Department supports the College mission of preparing each student for a life characterized by integrity, intellectual and spiritual values, social responsibility and service — a life that is worthy of the college’s motto: Esse non videri — "To be, not to seem."
