Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the United States and one of the top five most spoken languages in the world. A major in the language helps students prepare for graduate programs as well as a variety of careers, including education, communications, translation, advertising, international business and banking, social services and bilingual counseling, law, diplomacy and politics, travel and tourism.
The Department of Modern Languages develops students’ proficiency in Spanish and fosters their understanding and appreciation of the Spanish-speaking world’s diverse societies. The Spanish major progresses from intermediate to advanced courses in conversation, grammar and composition through the study of Spanish, Latin American and U.S. Latino literatures and cultures, including history, art, music and film. The Department also provides opportunities for Spanish majors to engage other cultures beyond the classroom through our service-learning and study abroad opportunities, which span from New York City to Nicaragua, Argentina, and Spain.
The program’s quality has been recognized in graduate school grants, fellowships and assistantships awarded to our graduates in Spanish.
