"Being a Spanish concentrate at St. Joseph’s University allowed me to expand my horizons of the Spanish speaking world. Through dynamic, engaging yet rigorous courses ranging from literature and art to cinematography, the passionate faculty allowed me to see that although Spanish is a spoken language, the history, people and cultures that encompass that language is diverse. Such understanding, therefore, allowed me to gain a greater appreciation of Hispanic civilization and culture. As a result, my passion for understanding my cultural background and language deepened to the extent that I went on to pursue a bilingual teaching certificate in order to teach my elementary students the importance of speaking a second language as well as expand their cultural understandings. The world is becoming smaller each day and by knowing and understanding another language and culture, my students will not only be bilingual and biliterate, they will also be positive contributors to an ever increasing multilingual world."
