Mathematics Education

Teach the difference with an M.A. in Mathematics Education from SJC Long Island.

The M.A. in Mathematics Education is a 30-credit degree that you can earn in two years of part-time study. The degree requires two classes each semester, including the summer. This allows you to teach during the day and attend school in the evenings.

The department seeks to instill in teaching professionals dedication to the discipline, as well as the desire and ability to become lifelong learners.

Mathematics

The master’s program aims to extend the depth and breadth of mathematical skills previously learned on the undergraduate level. For example, the real analysis course explains why many of the concepts learned in Calculus hold true. There will also be a focus on connections to the mathematics taught in middle and high schools.

Education

Particular attention will be paid to integrating technology with the teaching of mathematics in order to meet the current teaching standards. Students will also learn skills in self-analysis, assessment, and teaching a diverse population of students who possess varying cognitive skills and learning styles. In order to prepare students to teach in the modern classroom they will study important topics in current mathematics education (e.g. gender gap).

Research

Students perform in depth exploration of current research in mathematics education. Using this knowledge, students then perform their own novel research into a chosen topic in the field of mathematics education. Students will learn how to produce publishable articles that meet professional standards and then compose one such article.

“After graduating with my BA from SJC, I started teaching in Plainedge and continued working on my master's at SJC. St. Joseph's College offered me many opportunities to grow not only academically, but socially and emotionally as well. ”

Potential Applicants

Candidates for this program will have previously earned initial certification to teach mathematics at the secondary level. Completion of the program will satisfy the degree requirements for professional certification in New York state.
