The social sciences promote an understanding of social, economic and political issues, particularly with regard to social justice and the creation of constructive solutions to contemporary problems. They engage students in critical thinking, methodological training and contextual analysis and communication. Graduates are well-equipped to pursue graduate study or enter a variety of professions, including positions in criminal justice, education, nonprofit organizations, business, social work or state and local government.
Qualified majors have an opportunity to complete an internship for credit at a number of public and private organizations, including the United Nations, New York City and state agencies. During election years, qualified students may do an internship at the Republican or Democratic national convention. In conjunction with other colleges and universities, students may also study abroad.
Housing faculty members from all of these disciplines—economics, political science and sociology—within a common department provides students interested in any of these fields with a rich set of course offerings and a faculty accustomed to making connections to disciplines beyond their own.
