MOSAIC Program

St. Joseph’s College has recently partnered with the National Science Foundation and local industries to form an educational collaboration known as Meeting Our Scientific and Interdisciplinary Challenges (MOSAIC). This program provides financial and academic support to eligible SJC biology, chemistry, computer science, computer information systems and mathematics majors during their undergraduate studies, as well as job placement assistance after graduation. Students explore the interdisciplinary relationships among individual MOSAIC major fields to instill the sense that they are part of a larger technological mosaic.

The MOSAIC program attracts more students into areas of national need and to increase retention of students – particularly women and other underrepresented minorities – to degree achievement, through scholarships and mentoring programs. Selected scholars will receive personal attention in a supportive learning environment, thus encouraging them to complete their degrees and to enter the high technology workforce as well-educated and qualified professionals.

What is the MOSAIC program?

A support program for St. Joseph’s College biology, chemistry, mathematics, computer science or computer information systems majors.

What kind of support does the program provide?

The program provides financial (up to $10,000 per academic year) and mentoring support from a faculty member and assistance with internship and occupational placement.

Who is eligible for this program?

Candidates must:

  • be a U.S. citizen, national or alien admitted as a refugee
  • be accepted or currently enrolled as a full-time student majoring in biology, chemistry, computer science, computer information systems or mathematics
  • have a demonstrated residual (after considering all other financial awards outside of this program) financial need
  • have an 87 percent high-school average or higher if a freshman
  • have a 3.0 GPA (out of 4.0) or higher if a transfer or continuing student

How do I apply?

There is no special application process. Students completing the normal college admissions and financial aid applications are automatically considered for the program if they indicate a STEM major on their application or attach a statement indicating interest in the MOSAIC program.

When will I know if I have been selected?

Students who have been selected to participate will be informed by mid-May.

What are the selection criteria?

STEM major, academic merit and financial need with consideration given to underrepresented groups.

What must I do to remain in the program?

Maintain good academic standing (generally a GPA of 3.0 or higher), demonstrate qualities consistent with professional success and participate in the program assessment.

Will my financial aid be the same amount every year?

No. It could increase or decrease based on your financial need and the availability of funds.

Can I enter the program if I am not selected in my freshman year?

Yes. All eligible students are considered every year.
