Alumni Give Back by Contributing to the Vitality of Its Communities
By Jennifer Sarnicola ’04
St. Joseph’s College prepares its students and alumni to lead a life that is full of integrity, intellectual and spiritual values, social responsibility and service—a life that is worthy of the College’s motto, Esse non videri: “To be, not to seem.” These core values are part of the reason why the alumni associations on both the Long Island and Brooklyn campuses are branching out and giving back to not only their campus communities, but the communities that surround its campuses as well.
For the past few years, alumni and students on the Brooklyn Campus have been participating in what they call Volunteer Day. An annual event held during the spring semester, Volunteer Day brings alumni and students together for a single day to clean up and organize St. Joseph’s High School in Brooklyn. Last year, two murals were painted in the basement of the high school—one depicting the 8 Wonders of the World and the other a map of the seven continents—to illustrate a unified community.

Recently, the St. Joseph’s College Alumni Association, Long Island Chapter took on a new venture—it will be participating in a Adopt-A-Highway campaign and has already acquired one mile of area from Waverly Avenue, off of Sunrise Highway, to First Street by the Fifth Precinct in Patchogue.
“We have a responsibility to give back to a community that we take great pride in and we’re fortunate enough to have an area around the College to do just that,” said Raymond Fragola Jr. ’04, president of the Alumni Association. Cleanups of the highway are scheduled to begin in the next few months and the campaign will be an ongoing project that everyone can participate in.Both campuses provide alumni with an opportunity to give back to current and future students in a variety of ways.
Two to three times a year, alumni are called upon to attend open houses and admitted student receptions to talk with and offer first hand advice to students who are considering attending St. Joseph’s College.
Another great volunteer opportunity available to alumni is the Alumni Mentoring Program. As a mentor, alumni are able to participate in panel discussions, offer advice on resumes and cover letters, provide practice interviews, all students to visit them at work, or even host an on-site visit at their place of employment. The opportunities are endless and it truly is a rewarding experience.
The College takes pride in all of its alumni and students, and their dedication to volunteerism and community service epitomizes who and what St. Joseph’s represents. If you are interested in getting involved, participating in any of the above mentioned programs or simply have suggestions to offer, please contact the Office of Alumni Relations at either campus.
