Bears Look to Repeat
by Anthony Macapugay

Elation erupted onto the court at Pratt Institute last February. The pain of falling in the Hudson Valley Men’s Athletic Conference final four straight times dissipated in an instant. And the St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) men’s basketball team finally won its first HVMAC championship after dispatching Berkeley.
But with titles, comes expectations, which seventh-year SJC coach Joseph Cocozello is certainly aware about.
“Although we finally won last year, the goal hasn’t changed,” said Cocozello, who won the HVMAC Coach of the Year award. “Our primary goal for this season is to repeat as Hudson Valley Champions. Secondly, we would like to get our seniors back to the USCAA National Tournament.”
That, perhaps, is a reachable feat. With nine players returning and five newcomers, SJC looks like the Bears of 2007-2008. They’ll have to do it without their emotional leader Chris Olaskiewicz (10.5 points per game, 6.5 rebounds), however, and Cocozello will look to seniors Ervin Maddox (17.0 ppg, 3.7 apg) and Przemyslaw Kudla (6.5 ppg, 3.8 ppg) to provide leadership. Maddox recently reached the 1,000-point milestone in the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament where the Bears took second place and Kudla remains a solid defender.
There are also lofty expectations for sophomores Jon Matzelle (13.6 ppg, 8.9 rpg) and Justin Gist (14.3 ppg). Matzelle had a solid rookie campaign that was capped by a HVMAC tournament MVP selection. Gist, rather, is dynamic from the entire floor and returns after sitting last season due to academic reasons.
Other key returners are junior Wilkerson Exantus (5.9 ppg, 5.3 rpg) and senior Lukasz Klimaszewski (3.6 ppg, 2.6 rpg), Mike Dziewit, Larry Fawcett and Paul Kielmanowicz. Freshman newcomers are Antoine Forehand (Rice), Roy Wickstrom (St. Peters), Wendell Manifold (Bishop Loughlin), Kelvin Valdez (St. Agnes) and Emil Golaszewski (Liberty).
Cocozello also had a change on the bench, bringing in assistant coach Wayne Warmbier ’07 to replace Nolan Adams. And the Bears will face a much tougher schedule as they enter the second year of the NCAA provisional process.
SJC opens its title defense at the Mt. Aloysius Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament in Altoona, PA and will travel to Washington, D.C. in January for the Catholic University Tournament. In early December, the Bears face cross-campus rival SJC (Long Island), and a date with Medgar Evers at New Jersey’s Izod Center before the Nets/Rockets game. Playing in their new home court, Brooklyn Technical High School, matchups against Mount St. Vincent and long-time rival Berkeley College highlight the home slate.
Don't forget! Friday, December 5th is the East vs. West Basketball game! The Bears travel to the Danzi Center to take on the Golden Eagles in what is sure to be a fun night! Details here.
