Alumni Association Sponsors History Forum On “America: A Changing Landscape”
by Jessica McAleer Decatur
The Alumni Association sponsored a forum hosted by the SJC History Club on “America: A Changing Landscape” on November 6. The four person panel, which was moderated by Doris Stratmann, Academic Dean for the School of Arts and Sciences at the Long Island Campus, included Supervisors Brian X. Foley (Town of Brookhaven) and Steve Bellone (Town of Babylon), Councilwoman Pamela J. Greene (Town of Islip) and Dr. Steven Rockwell, SJC American Studies Coordinator.
The program began with welcoming remarks and panel introductions by SJC History Club President, Greg Gershowitz. Panelists then proceeded to discuss a broad spectrum of topics, including illegal immigration, global warming, think tanks and the war in Iraq.
When asked what the nation needed to do to find a workable solution to illegal immigration, Supervisor Brian X. Foley explained that the issue is a volatile one, both historically and politically. “It’s a fact that people want to come to this country,” said Foley. “The international dynamic impacts us on the local level and we need to use our authority to come up with better ways to solve these problems.”

Supervisor Steve Bellone felt that the country was at a crossroads and that the next presidential election would be one of our most critical. “As a nation, we are fighting the war on terror and we are bearing the burden of that war,” he opined. “We are going deeper and deeper into debt and other nations will benefit economically from our burden.”
“Going Green” was also a big topic of the day and Councilwoman Pamela J. Greene took the opportunity to encourage students to be more environmentally conscious. “If every American recycled 1/10 of their paper, we could save 25 million trees every year,” explained Greene.
The forum, which was held in the McGann Conference Center, had approximately 60 people in attendance, including students, faculty and Patchogue Mayor, Paul V. Pontieri Jr. Wrapping up the event with one final sentiment, Dean Stratmann, who thanked the panel for their attendance and insight, gave closing remarks. “If the public discourse was anything like ours, the landscape would be much a healthier one,” she said.
