LI Athletics Earn Post-Season Accolades: Golden Eagles Win Skyline Presidents Cup, Coach of the Year Awards
by Frank Flandina ’00

Women's Championship cross CountrySt. Joseph’s College, which captured three Skyline Conference titles, while earning four second-place and three third-place finishes, captured the inaugural Skyline Conference Presidents Cup.

The Skyline Conference instituted the Presidents Cup this year to gauge all-sports excellence among member schools.

“This has been an outstanding year for St. Joseph’s College Athletics,” said Don Lizak, athletic director for the Long Island Campus.

“The Skyline Conference President’s Cup symbolizes excellence across the board in our intercollegiate program and our many team championships and high team finishes have resulted in numerous individual student athlete awards as well as honors for our coaches.”

St. Joseph’s finished with an overall rating of .811, compiling 92.5 points out of a possible 114. Farmingdale State College, which captured three Skyline Conference titles and three second-place finishes, finished a close second with a rating of .756. Mount Saint Mary College, winner of four Skyline titles, placed third with a rating of .653.

“Our runner-up finish in the Conference sportsmanship trophy, and the two sportsmanship awards to our coaches speaks volumes about the integrity of our program,” said Lizak. I could not be more proud of our student athletes and coaches, not only for their accomplishments on the field, but in the classroom as well.”

Randy Caden was named as one of the conference’s coaches of the year after leading the Golden Eagles to a record 27 wins this spring. With six Skyline Conference Tournament appearances in eight years – three shared or outright regular-season titles, including one this season – Coach Caden has earned accolades by his colleagues and students for building a power program on the College’s Long Island Campus.

In addition to Coach Caden’s win, six other coaches from St. Joseph’s College received Skyline Conference Coach of the Year awards: Al Sciangula (softball), John Mateyko (men’s basketball), Jim Crowley (men’s and women’s cross country), George Cangero (men’s golf), Glenn Nathan (men’s tennis) and Joe Lee (women’s soccer).
