St. Joseph’s College Bids Farewell to Long-time Teacher and Mentor of Students
by Samantha Saines ’06
On Saturday, June 7, St. Joseph’s College faculty, staff, alumni and friends came together to celebrate the retirement and many accomplishments of long-time employee and Chairperson for the Department of Physical Sciences, S. Mary Maier.
The afternoon began as guests gathered in the campus’ Bloodgood Gardens to send farewell wishes and express their gratitude and appreciation to the guest of honor for her many years of inspiration as a teacher, colleague, friend and mentor. During the reception, several alumni guest speakers offered favorable remarks on behalf of S. Mary, echoing her own kindheartedness, words of wisdom she imparted to them as a professor of chemistry and noting how she helped shape their professional careers.
Guest alumni speakers at the event included Ursulina Bencosme ’93, Corinne Gamper ’79 and Charanjeet Jassal ’99, all of whom shared their success stories.
“The testimonials from the alumni spoke very highly of the person and teacher that she is,” said alumna and director of human resources, D’adra Crump ’05. “They certainly echoed the essence of her character.”
S. Mary Maier began her career at St. Joseph’s more than three decades ago as a part-time teacher. In the mid-1970s, she came on board as a full-time professor, and in the early 1980s she was appointed Chairperson of the Physical Sciences Department on the Brooklyn Campus. During her time spent at the College, S. Mary was an integral part of the foundation for science programs for young children. These free classes, which were held on Saturdays twice a year, developed into a high school outreach program that promoted science research in a laboratory setting. Among her many achievements, S. Mary Maier is an active member of the American Chemical Society and has been a recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including her most recent “Outstanding Scientist Award” from the Association of Women in Science. She has also been published in numerous periodicals in the field of science.
We all share in wishing S. Mary Maier many more years of great discovery, good health and a very happy retirement.
