BROOKLYN, NY – FEBRUARY 27, 2006 – The St. Joseph’s Council for the Arts is proud to join forces with the Clinton Hill Art Gallery to present the work of local Brooklyn artists in a juried exhibition “Images of Social Justice: Small Works, Big Heart.” Janet Braun-Reinitz, a community muralist and social activist, will judge the exhibit of specially selected works from the Brooklyn art community on the theme of social justice. “Images of Social Justice: Small Works, Big Heart,” which includes artwork individually selected by a panel of curators, will be on display from Tuesday, February 21 to March 30, 2006 on the Brooklyn campus of St. Joseph’s College.
New York City Councilwoman Letitia James and Emmy-Award winning producer Callie Crossley will present the awards to the winning artists with St. Joseph’s College president S. Elizabeth A. Hill, CSJ, JD at a special ceremony on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at 5:30 p.m. in the Alumni Room Gallery. The first prize winner will be invited to have his or her own show this spring at the Clinton Hill Art Gallery. Receptions will take place on Thursday, March 2, 2006 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, March 11, 2006 at 2 p.m. A gallery talk will occur on Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at 12:40 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.
The participating artists all of whom are Brooklyn-based include: Kennis Baptiste, Leopla Bermanzohn, Noa Bornstein, Susan Bowen, Maria Dominguez, Diane Drescher, Ernst Louis-Jean, Richard Massie, Rochelle Shicoff, Nina Talbot and Elyse Taylor. Ms. Braun-Reinitz, the judge of the exhibit has created more than 50 community murals, mainly in New York City. She is a frequent guest artist in the area’s public schools where she has created a variety of art and design programs. Braun-Reinitz is also the president of Artmakers, Inc., an artist-run, politically oriented community mural organization that, since 1983, has created public art relevant to the lives and work of neighborhood people.
“When Women Pursue Justice,” a mural designed and created by Ms. Braun-Reinitz along with several members of Artmakers, was finished in October 2005. “When Woman Pursue Justice” will be the focus of an upcoming show at St. Joseph’s College.
“Images of Social Justice: Small Works, Big Heart,” will be on view in the St. Joseph’s College Alumni Room through March 30, 2006.
