PATCHOGUE, NY – APRIL 25, 2006 – In response to recent political events concerning HR4437 (Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005), St. Joseph’s College students are organizing an Immigrant Solidarity Day on May 1, 2006 from 10:30 AM until 6:30 PM. This full day of events, entitled “United We Stand: Immigrants and Long Island,” will feature films, music, food, lectures and peaceful protest to demonstrate student and community opposition to HR4437.
During Immigrant Solidarity Day, guest speaker Sister Margaret Smyth, from the Spanish Apostolate of Riverhead, will lecture on “The Changing Face of Long Island” at 12:30 PM and the film, “Bread and Roses” will be shown at 2:00 PM. There will also be a multicultural music performance, a poetry contest and a potluck dinner, also known as a Solidarity Supper. All events are free and open to the public.
