PATCHOGUE AND BROOKLYN, NY – JUNE 21, 2006 – St. Joseph’s College announced today that it is introducing a new Master of Business Administration program in Accounting as well as a new dual program, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Accounting paired with the MBA in Accounting. Both degree programs will be offered beginning in the fall semester of 2006 on the Patchogue and Brooklyn campuses. The Office of Graduate Management Studies at St. Joseph’s College also offers the Executive Master of Business Administration and the MS in Management with concentrations in Organizational Management, Health Care Management or Human Resources Management.
The MBA in Accounting is a 36-credit program with classes ranging from Leadership and Managerial Development to Advanced Auditing. The courses for the program include eight graduate management courses and four graduate accounting courses. This program was introduced as a result of the new licensure requirements for CPAs, which take effect in 2009. New regulations stipulate that accounting students must have 150 hours of education in professional accountancy, general business and liberal arts and sciences, rather than the 120 hours that were previously required. Several undergraduate accounting, business and other prerequisites are required before enrolling in the MBA program.
Another option for students is the dual program in Accounting, which offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Accounting paired with the MBA. This five-year, 152-credit program has been introduced to facilitate a student’s growth in the fields of accounting and management, and to give them the opportunity to assess real-world business and accounting issues. After completing 90 credits, students can apply to the graduate management studies program. Students who are accepted into the program will begin to take graduate courses in their senior year followed by one summer and two full semesters of graduate coursework.
“The biggest selling point of our program is that in addition to providing accountants with a comprehensive program of study in advanced accounting subjects, we also provide them with a strong foundation in management education. This foundation will help them become more effective as managers and leaders in their organizations,” explains Mary A. Chance, Director of the Graduate Management Studies Program and Assistant Professor of Accounting at St. Joseph’s College. “Our program is unique in many respects. In every course, students are given the opportunity to develop their leadership and managerial abilities, to apply course concepts to a workplace problem or task, and to analyze issues of ethics, social and professional responsibility. In some cases, various professional organizations have selected students’ projects for publication or presentation.”
St. Joseph’s College will host Graduate Management Information Sessions for students to learn more about the MBA and the BS/MBA in Accounting programs on June 22, July 20, August 10, October 19, November 16 and December 17, 2006.
