Patchogue, NY – July 11, 2006 – St. Joseph’s College will again host the 2006 Suffolk County Golden Games, an all-day athletic competition for Suffolk County senior citizens, on Friday, July 14, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the state-of-the-art Danzi Athletic Center at the Patchogue campus. Opening ceremonies featuring a color guard from the Patchogue Army Recruiting Station will begin at 10:00 a.m.
Teams representing 11 nursing home residences across the county with 9 residents on each team will compete in physical events such as the wheel chair relay, ball toss, darts, volley ball and bowling tournaments. Participating nursing homes this year include the Gurwin Jewish Geriatric Center, Our Lady of Consolation, Nesconset Nursing Home, San Simeon by the Sound, Affinity Skilled Nursing Center, Broadlawn Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation, Daleview Care Center, Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Riverhead Nursing Home, East Neck Nursing & Rehabilitation and St. Johnland Nursing Center.
Founded in 1989 by Karen Nash, CTRS, Director of Therapeutic Recreation at the Gurwin Jewish Geriatric Center, the Suffolk County Golden Games will run in conjunction with National Therapeutic Recreation Week, a nationwide event celebrated during the second week of July every year to help enhance public awareness of therapeutic recreation programs and services, and expand recreation and leisure opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
