PATCHOGUE, NY – JUNE 29, 2006 – St. Joseph’s College student, Patrick Corcoran has been awarded one of the runner-up prizes from Long Island’s grocery royalty, King Kullen, in its 16th annual scholarship contest.

Patrick Corcoran, winner of a $250 runner-up scholarship, will begin his junior year as a history major at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue, NY this fall. He has been employed by King Kullen for 4 years, along with several of his family members including his mother, father and uncle. Corcoran is also a volunteer Varsity football coach at Lindenhurst High School and expects to graduate from St. Joseph’s College in 2008; he plans to teach history after he graduates.

“Pat is the kind of student that makes teaching so rewarding,” explained Monica Brennan, history professor at St. Joseph’s College. “He'll make an outstanding high school teacher and community leader on Long Island.”

The King Kullen scholarship program is open to all King Kullen employees and their immediate family members who are pursuing a degree in higher education. The grand prize scholarship is $2500 with 90 runner-up prizes, one per store, of $250 each. Applicants for the King Kullen scholarship have to complete a thorough application and submit two letters of recommendation as well as a formal transcript. The applications are sent to all King Kullen stores every January and the winners are chosen, based on grades and extra-curricular activities, in June of that same year.
