Brooklyn, NY - January 18, 2007: St. Joseph's College Council for the Arts and the Office of Co-Curricular Activities will present an exhibit by Sister Patricia Manning, CSJ, entitled: "Another View: Beyond Tourism," which will feature pictures taken on her photographical sabbatical at obscure sites across the United States. The exhibit will be on display at the Alumni Room Gallery, Tuohy Hall, 245 Clinton Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y., from January 18th to February 25th. There will be a gallery talk with the artist on Tuesday, January 30th at 12:40, and the opening reception will be held later that from 5:30 to 8. All are free and open to the general public. Regular gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 12 to 3 p.m.
In Spring 2004, the College granted Sister Pat a photographical sabbatical to travel around the rim of the United States and photographically document people and places not usually featured in travel guides and brochures. The main goal of this trip was to find the beauty of the "obscure" and the richness of the "unknown." The trip was taken over the course of six months and was traversed on back roads whenever possible. For photo shoots, Sister Pat relied largely on the suggestions of local residents as opposed to travel guidebooks. The exhibit resulting from this trip features 50 of the best pictures taken out of a collection of 15,000 photos.
A native New Yorker, Sister Pat has centered a vibrant teaching career around the metropolitan area since 1965. Currently, she chairs the art department at St. Joseph’s College, a position she has held for over 25 years. Sister Pat’s expertise stretches from calligraphy and pottery to photography, graphic arts and studio art forms. She has exhibited many of her works on college campuses and in galleries and studios near and far.
Founded by Sister Elizabeth A. Hill, CSJ, J.D., president, the St. Joseph’s College Council for the Arts is a coalition of students, faculty members and staff who serve as a focal point for St. Joseph’s College’s educational and community outreach programming in the arts. By expanding and integrating campus arts activities, the Council seeks to enhance the public image of the College as a cultural center in Brooklyn and aims to make arts and cultural events more accessible to its students and area neighbors.
