Multicultural Student Life At SJC Presents “Unity Week”

PATCHOGUE, NY – SEPTEMBER 14, 2007 – The Office of Multicultural Student Life at St. Joseph’s College is pleased to announce it will be sponsoring its annual Unity Week from October 8-11, 2007. Dedicated to the advancement of knowledge and diversity on campus, Unity Week is comprised of events that bring various multicultural speakers and performers to campus to broaden and diversify the college community at large.

On October 9, the College will hold a town hall meeting on race and race relations, which will talk about the question, Is Race Still an Issue? An open discussion between faculty, students and the College community at large, the forum will consist of a panel that addresses issues on the state of social scrutiny, both locally and globally.

On October 10, Harlym125, an educator, activist, romantic, entertainer, poet and actor will perform for the Long Island Campus, illustrating his commitment to the art form with conviction toward preserving its purity, artistic freedom and creativity. A featured poet at the 2001 Black Expo & Kwanzaa Fest at the Jacob Javitz Center, Harlym125 has appeared on the stage of the World Famous Apollo Theatre, performed for VH-1, and just completed filming for the movie “Dream Hughes’, a celebration of the life of Langston Hughes.”

Visitors are also invited to enjoy a variety of cultural events, such as henna tattooing, Chinese calligraphy, Origami, African hair braiding and ethnic cuisine, during an international food festival on October 11 from 12:40-2:00 p.m. in the College Cafeteria located in the basement of O’Connor Hall.
