SJC Establishes New Scholarship Fund and Business Ethics Fellows Program

PATCHOGUE, NY – JANUARY 3, 2008 – St. Joseph’s College is pleased to announce that it has established the Thomas A. Doherty Fund to create a visiting fellows program in business ethics and two endowed scholarships in his name.

A former chairman of the board and trustee for more than twenty years at St. Joseph’s College, Doherty was a retired chairman, president and chief executive of Fleet Bank. He served on the board of directors for New York Community Bancorp, the holding company for New York Community Bank and New York Commercial Bank, and was a former chief administrative officer of the privately held First Quality Enterprises Inc., which owns a consumer products company.

“Thomas Doherty was a leader in the business community and served as a role model to countless individuals,” said Sister Elizabeth A. Hill, C.S.J., J.D., president of St. Joseph’s College. “It is our privilege and honor to emulate the ethical behavior he displayed in his personal and professional life through this newly created endowment and fellows program.”

The Thomas A. Doherty Visiting Fellow in Business Ethics Program, the first of its kind at St. Joseph’s College, will connect business ethics with the world beyond the classroom. Ethicists will include representatives from government, business, journalism and medicine among others. As a complement to this program, the College will award annually, to a New York area person or organization that demonstrates special dedication or an innovative approach to ethics, the Thomas A. Doherty Award for Business Ethics.

The Thomas A. Doherty Scholarship Fund is partially endowed for two scholarships at St. Joseph’s College. The first of the two scholarships will be used to completely fund the education of a graduate student in the Executive M.B.A. program and the other will be a full scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student with financial need.

With a goal of raising $1 million by the end of June 2008, the Fund has already received more than $300,000 in pledges. For more information about the Thomas A. Doherty Fund, please contact Nancy Connors at (718) 636-6832 or (631) 447-3263 or email nconnors@sjcny.edu.
