Council For The Arts Presents “Nicaragua In Words And Images”

PATCHOGUE, NY – FEBRUARY 13, 2008 – The St. Joseph’s College Council for the Arts is proud to present an exhibit of photographs and writings by its own faculty and students who traveled on an alternative spring break to Nicaragua, entitled “Nicaragua in Words and Images.” The exhibit will be displayed in the Board Room Gallery located in O’Connor Hall on its Long Island Campus and will be on display from March 1 to March 31, 2008.

In March 2007, a group of twenty students and two faculty members from the interdisciplinary course at St. Joseph’s College, “Latin America at the Crossroads: From Colonization to Globalization” traveled on an alternative spring break trip to Leon, Nicaragua to learn about the outstanding needs of certain indigenous Latin American countries. On their journey to the underprivileged area of Sutiaba, the students assisted women and children of the area with their daily responsibilities and also constructed a house for them.

St. Joseph’s College has a strong reputation for programs and activities that allow students and faculty to carry out various forms of community service as they pursue their academic goals. With service-learning at the forefront, and as a result of this life changing experience, students and faculty have committed themselves to fostering a more permanent relationship between the College and the people of Sutiaba and will continue to travel to Nicaragua with a recent trip in January of this year and a future trip in May.
