PATCHOGUE, NY – MARCH 27, 2008 – As the students at St. Joseph’s College prepare for summer vacation, the Global Studies Department at its Long Island Campus is planning a trip to the indigenous community of Sutiaba located in Leon, Nicaragua.
The purpose of their trip, which will take place in May 2008, is to start a tutoring program, in which older students will help younger students with certain subject areas. Female students will form a women’s sewing co-operative effort to create clothing that will generate income for the area. The students will also build a house, paint a school and organize a sports league for underprivileged children in the area.
In March 2007, students from the service-learning class, Latin America at the Crossroads: Moral & Cultural Perspectives from Colonization to Globalization, embarked on a trip to Nicaragua to build a one-room daycare center and playground site for the local children. In January 2008, students from the College’s chapter of Amnesty International also traveled to the region. As a result of their annual expeditions, students at St. Joseph’s College have developed a profound relationship with the people of Sutiaba and will continue to support its efforts in improving the area.
