St. Joseph’s College Holds 15th Annual Golf Tournament
Proceeds from the event to support College’s Athletic Programs

PATCHOGUE, NY – May 20, 2005– St. Joseph’s College announced today that it will hold its 15th Annual Golf Tournament on Monday, June 13, 2005 at the Hamlet Golf and Country Club in Commack, New York. The 2005 honoree is former Senior PGA Tournament winner, Jim Albus. All proceeds from this event will support the College’s athletic programs.

“We are excited to have such a renowned club professional and Champions Tour Player join the St. Joseph’s College community to provide support for our athletic programs,” said Sister Elizabeth Hill, CSJ, J.D., president of St. Joseph’s College.

In 1969, Jim Albus secured the head professional’s position at the LaTourette Golf Club on Staten Island, and in 1970, he quickly established himself as one of the better players in the Metropolitan Section of the PGA of America winning the first of two Met Open Championships (’85). For the next two decades, he became the man to beat in the New York Metropolitan area.

In 1978, Mr. Albus moved to the prestigious Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley as its Head Golf Professional. During the next 14 years at Piping Rock, he won a series of tournaments in the New York metropolitan area. In addition to the two Met Open titles, Mr. Albus won two Met Section Championships (’81, ’82) and was named player of the year in the Met Section four times (’81, ’82, ’86, ’88). In 1986, Jim Albus was inducted into the Metropolitan PGA Hall of Fame, and in 1990 the PGA of America named him “Golf Professional of the Year.”

In later years, Mr. Albus began to focus his attention on the Senior PGA Tour, and in only his sixth start in the Senior Tour event, he came from three shots off the lead to capture The Senior Players Championship. With a Senior PGA Tour major in his pocket, Mr. Albus would go on to successfully battle the likes of Lee Trevino, Raymond Floyd and Jack Nicklaus, collecting five more titles along the way. In 1994, he set a Senior PGA Tour record for most birdies in the season, and also established the record for most rounds in the 60’s. In addition, Mr. Albus was the first Club Professional to eclipse the $1 million dollar mark in earnings for a single season.

A native of Staten Island, Mr. Albus currently resides in Sarasota, Florida with his wife Brenda. They have two grown children and two grandchildren.
