SJC To Host Former Congressman and House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt
Keynote Speech Second in Annual Presidential Lecture Series

PATCHOGUE AND BROOKLYN, NY – September 22, 2005 – St. Joseph’s College announced today that it will hold its second annual Presidential Lecture Series on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at 7:30 PM at its Patchogue Campus in the D’Ecclesiis Auditorium, O’Connor Hall. Richard Gephardt, Former Congressman and Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, will serve as the featured speaker of the event. His lecture is titled: “Opportunity, Responsibility and Community: Building Strength.” The Congressman will also host a Colloquium on the College’s Brooklyn campus at 12:30 PM that same day.

One of the nation’s most respected politicians for much of the last two decades, Congressman Gephardt is a two-time presidential candidate and an expert on economic issues and foreign affairs as well as an eloquent voice for fairness, justice and opportunity for every American.

During the eighties, Congressman Gephardt was elected Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-ranking leadership position in the House; he became the first democratic candidate to enter the 1988 presidential race, where he won the Iowa Democratic Caucus and helped frame the economic issues that dominated the election; and was elected by his colleagues in the House to serve as their Majority Leader.

In recent years, Congressman Gephardt has devoted many hours to the establishment of the Richard A. Gephardt Institute for Public Service at Washington University in St. Louis, which is a non-partisan institute created to conduct programs and events that will encourage people, especially students and older citizens, to become involved in public service, including through work that will be facilitated, enhanced and recognized by the Institute.

Now in its second year, the annual Presidential Lecture Series was established to further the educational goals of the College and to support its mission: Esse non videri: “To be, not to seem.” Each year St. Joseph’s will host a distinguished member of public life with experience, knowledge and perspectives that will challenge the College as an academic community and the community at large as citizens in the 21st century. The annual series will reflect the liberal arts ideals of free and open inquiry and of reasoned analysis.
