SJC Welcomes Internationally Renowned Photographer Gary Schneider
Local Artist to Present Slide Lecture at the College’s Suffolk Campus

PATCHOGUE, NY – SEPTEMBER 30, 2005 – Internationally renowned photographer Gary Schneider has been invited to give a slide presentation and artist’s lecture at the St. Joseph’s College Suffolk Campus on Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at 6:00 p.m. The event, which will take place in the McGann Conference Center located in O’Connor Hall, is free and open to the public.

One of the most thought-provoking and original contemporary artists today, Gary Schneider has received significant attention for his innovative use of science to probe issues of identity. Recognized for his luminescent portraits that transform their subject matter, Mr. Schneider’s work has been described as both conceptually challenging and visually compelling.

Gary Schneider’s groundbreaking project, Genetic Self Portrait, explores issues dealing with identity, photography, science, art and new technology. His thirty-year career as a filmmaker and photographer was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at Harvard University in 2004. According to Art in America Magazine, the photographs in his recently published monograph, Nudes, combine “awkward, grand, graceful and miraculous qualities in a personal way.”

Gary Schneider earned a BFA degree from the University of Cape Town in South Africa, and an MFA from Pratt Institute in New York City. He is an adjunct professor at the Cooper Union for Advancement of Science and Art in New York, and a visiting professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. He resides in Brookhaven, Long Island. For additional information, call Rick Miller at (631) 447-3325 or visit us online at www.sjcny.edu. St. Joseph’s College is located at 155 W. Roe Blvd. in Patchogue, and is accessible via the South Service Road of Sunrise Highway, just east of Exit 52 (Waverly Avenue).
