SJC Professor Receives Prestigious IEEE Award

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – FEBRUARY 14, 2014 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that S. Jane Fritz, C.S.J., professor of mathematics and computer science on the Long Island Campus, has been selected as a 2014 recipient of the Athanasios Papoulis Award, presented by the Long Island Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.

The award is presented annually to an educator in engineering, science or mathematics who has demonstrated innovative teaching techniques. Athanasios Papoulis, a professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now Polytechnic Institute of New York University) from 1952 until his death in 2002, was committed to promoting quality technical education on Long Island.

"I am both humbled and honored to receive this award and would like to thank everyone at IEEE for this recognition,” said S. Jane. “The students I teach are an inspiration to me and I am privileged to have the opportunity to help the next generation reach their goals and make a contribution to the STEM field.”

A longtime member of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at SJC, S. Jane was elevated to the grade of senior member of the IEEE in 2011. This elite rank is the highest professional grade for which an IEEE member may apply. Only 8 percent of the organization’s 400,000 members have achieved this distinction.

S. Jane will receive the Athanasios Papoulis Award at the IEEE Long Island Section Awards Banquet in Woodbury on March 20.
