BROOKLYN, N.Y. – May 15, 2018 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) and Consolidated Edison (Con Edison) are pleased to announce that they will collaborate on a college and career readiness tour with the Academy of Innovative Technology, a career and technical education (CTE) high school in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn on Friday, May 17.

“Our aspiring computer science students are eagerly anticipating this opportunity to get an inside look at the cybersecurity operations of one of NYC's most iconic companies,” said Phil Donohue, lead teacher of the CTE team at the Academy of Innovative Technology. “Our partnership with St. Joseph's illustrates what can be accomplished through furthering one's education.”

On May 17, students will take an interactive tour of Con Edison’s cybersecurity operations at their corporate headquarters and learn the challenges of securing one of the nation’s largest utility systems. From there, the group will travel to SJC Brooklyn and discover how their experience in high school can lead to a degree and career in computer science.

“Our partnership with Con Edison has provided students passionate about science and technology with the financial support they need to work toward their dreams at SJC.” said Rory Shaffer-Walsh, vice president for institutional advancement at SJC. “We are thrilled for the opportunity to bring our students and also aspiring young scholars from our partnering high school, to learn about the career opportunities that exist in computer science.”

SJC Brooklyn’s Con Edison Math and Science Scholarship has funded degrees at SJC Brooklyn for students who have gone on to successful careers in science, medicine and technology.

“Cybersecurity for the electric grid and our informational infrastructure is a national security issue,” said Mikhail Falkovich, director of information security at Con Edison. “Developing student awareness and encouraging them to visualize the horizons associated with a cybersecurity career is important. We are proud to partner with St. Joseph’s College and to share our knowledge with those who will be in a position to protect us in the decades to come.”
