Brooklyn and Patchogue, N.Y. – March 9, 2015 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to introduce a Bachelor of Science in Nursing to its undergraduate programs on both its Brooklyn and Long Island campuses for the 2015 fall semester.

“Preparing the next generation of nurses to be the future leaders of the health care industry is one of our greatest responsibilities," said Florence Jerdan, Ph.D., associate professor and director of the Department of Nursing at SJC. “We are excited to introduce this new program that will provide students with all of the knowledge and essential tools to ensure they are successful in their careers.”

The B.S. in Nursing was designed to prepare SJC students for careers as registered professional nurses. The program will include the use of sophisticated patient simulation and skills labs to enhance student learning and provide opportunities to gain practice before their first clinical experience in the hospital setting by developing psychomotor skills, critical thinking skills and clinical reasoning essential to nursing practice. The program will also provide a supportive and caring environment for students to learn, practice and refine skills needed to function in the clinical setting.

For completion, the program will require a minimum of 128 credits with several required courses including: Nursing Leadership and Management, Concepts of Pharmacology, Nursing Care of Child Bearing Families and Nursing Informatics. In addition, the students will participate in an intensive, supervised clinical experience with a preceptor in a selected health care agency and faculty-directed clinical seminars.

SJC was recently awarded more than $640,000 in grant funding from the Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) for expansion of the new nursing program and construction of simulation and skills labs on the Long Island Campus.
