BROOKLYN and PATCHOGUE, NEW YORK – December 8, 2021 - St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is proud to announce that Sister Nancy Gilchriest, SSND, Ed.D., associate professor of education, was recently selected by the New York Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (NYACTE) for the Charles C. Mackey Award, which honors an educator in New York State who has demonstrated personal and professional qualities that exemplify the highest standards of service leadership in teacher education.

“As I look at the criteria for this award, it seems to me that the five qualities listed are those to which every teacher aspires, and achievable for those teachers who are fortunate to minister with amazing students and awesome teachers,” said Gilchriest. “I consider myself blessed to have been a part of the St. Joseph's College community, which fostered my SSND educational values, and fortunate to have followed in the footsteps of servant educators such as Charles C. Mackey.”

The Charles C. Mackey, Jr. Excellence in Service Leadership Award recognizes an individual who represents teacher education in an institution of higher education in New York State. The individual exemplifies service leadership within the institutional setting and within the broader New York professional community through engagement, initiative and personal qualities.

"Sister Nancy has been at the forefront of advancing the College's efforts to prepare aspiring educators for careers of excellence, most recently spearheading our successful efforts to launch our new graduate TESOL program," said SJC President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D. "Her selection for this prestigious award is wonderfully apt and on behalf of the entire SJC community, I commend her on this richly deserved honor."

During her 15 year career at SJC, Sister Nancy Gilchriest created numerous new courses and programs to enrich the educational experience received by SJC students, most notably the graduate TESOL program, as well as the educational leadership with critical consciousness graduate program. With an extensive body of scholarship, service and leadership, Gilchriest was recently selected as Provincial Councilor for the Atlantic-Midwest Province of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, where she will serve with five other sisters in ministering to our 380 sisters on the east coast, Chicago, Canada and England for a four-year term.
