SJC BROOKLYN TO PARTNER WITH TZU CHI FOUNDATION TO PROVIDE FREE SAT COURSES

March 11, 2021 BK

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – March 11, 2021 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it will partner with the Tzu Chi Foundation to provide free virtual SAT preparation classes to local high school students. These classes will be targeted to recently arrived immigrant high school juniors and seniors who demonstrate academic promise but require additional help with the verbal component of the exam.

"If it's anything we've learned this past year, it's that students have disproportionately felt the impact of the pandemic, particularly as it pertains to their educational goals and aspirations," said Phillip Dehne, Ph.D., executive dean and professor of history at SJC Brooklyn. "Our ongoing partnership with the Tzu Chi Foundation will enable us to fulfill our mission by providing participating students with the resources they need to prepare for and succeed in college."

The classes will provide students with in-depth preparation for the verbal component of the SAT exam. Designed for students for whom English is a second or third language, the aim of this course is to review all sections of the current test and offer strategies for improvement in all seven areas, including the essay. There will be a special focus on vocabulary acquisition, grammar and usage, and, most importantly, reading comprehension.

"Though we cannot meet in-person, our annual SAT test prep program with St. Joseph's College will continue virtually this year," said Freeman Su, executive director, Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, Northeast Region. "By sharing the gift of education with our community, we are developing the foundation for a bright and prosperous future through spreading loving kindness."

The SAT preparation course will run from March 11 through April 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. online. The class is free, but students will be required to purchase the supporting book for $25. For more information, contact Michael Banach at 718.940.5584 or [email protected].
