Presented by the Institute of Hospitality and Tourism Management and sponsored by SJC Brooklyn’s Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management, the Department of Journalism and New Media Studies, and Hospitalented, the Spring 2019 IHTM Symposium is open to anyone who wants a glimpse into the future of air travel. Airline Expo (AEX) is the intersection of airlines, airports and travel writing.

The symposium is designed for HTM students, partner high school students and industry colleagues. The goal is to also attract journalism and new media students interested in writing from a travel perspective. In between panelists from different parts of the airline industry, including HTM program alumni, students will engage in interactive activities to inspire them to consider different careers. The finale for the event is a $25,000 paper airplane contest for participating students.

Keynote Speaker

Erik PalmerOur keynote speaker for this year is Erik Palmer, managing director of the TWA Hotel, an MCR company. In this role, Mr. Palmer leads the day-to-day operations of the 512-room TWA Hotel at John F. Kennedy International Airport, which opens May 15, 2019. Prior to joining MCR in 2018, Mr. Palmer served as the hotel manager for the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville — the largest non-casino hotel in the United States — and transformed the property into a top performer in Marriott’s portfolio. Previously, Mr. Palmer was the general manager at the Courtyard and Residence Inn L.A. LIVE, which was ranked among the top five hotels in Marriott’s western region for guest satisfaction. He also served as the director of hotel operations at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa. Before that, he was the director of event management at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Residences and JW Marriott at L.A. LIVE, as well as at the New York Marriott Marquis, where he began his career as a banquet manager. Mr. Palmer has a B.S. in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management from the University of Delaware.
