Brooklyn Voices: Fatimah Asghar

October 27, 2022
7:30pm
Tuohy Hall Auditorium, Brooklyn Campus

St. Joseph’s University, in partnership with Greenlight Bookstore, is pleased to welcome Fatimah Asghar—the polymathic, boundary-shifting poet, filmmaker, educator, and performer—and her much-anticipated debut novel as part of its Brooklyn Voices lecture series.

Wrenching, poetic, and unguardedly tender, When We Were Sisters explores the interlocking ties between three Muslim American sisters who, after their parents die, are left to raise one another in a country whose systems were not designed for them. In crisp and evocative vignettes, Asghar unspools this unique coming-of-age tale that delves into, in her own words, “the failures and shortcomings of language... kids that are overlooked, and all the definitions of themselves they are able to make from that overlooking." Asghar will grace the St. Joseph's University stage along with fellow acclaimed poets Angel Nafis, José Olivarez, and Jess Snow for an evening of reading, conversation, and celebration.
