SJC Announces Dates for Summer Institute

June 02, 2015

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — JUNE 2, 2015 — Recognizing that it’s never too early to introduce students to career possibilities, St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is opening its Brooklyn Campus to middle school students entering grades 6, 7 and 8 and high school students entering grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 to its Summer Institute.

SJC’s Summer Institute offers a broad array of courses, including psychology, forensic science, veterinary science, writing, mathematics and art. Designed to foster personal development through academic study and hands-on experience, SJC’s Summer Institute offers three, one-week sessions in July where students can extend their learning throughout the summer.

“There are not a lot of academic summer options for students and this makes us unique,” said Douglas Murphy, director of SJC’s Summer Institute. “Many students waste a year or two in college before they realize the area they have chosen to study is not what they want. This program is a great way for them to get a feel for what it might be like.”

In its third year, SJC’s Summer Institute is introducing two new classes to its program this summer: Middle School Enrichment and Explore NYC. The Middle School Enrichment class promotes time management skills teaching students how to organize their schedules, pace their work and improve study habits. The class also encourages steps to taking a leadership role and emphasizing the positive power of one’s voice. Math skills, reading comprehension and writing are also highlighted in the class. Explore NYC brings kids from the classroom to the historic sites of the neighborhood for experiential, hands-on learning.

“So often kids who grow up in the city don’t do the cool things that are available,” Murphy said. “We want to start with exploring our own neighborhood, including going to the Navy Yard at Building 92. We will also study bridges and take them to the Brooklyn Bridge. We will study interesting architecture, then visit the Flatiron Building.”

SJC’s Summer Institute offers three sessions in July. Held Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (early drop-off and late-pickup available). Class sizes are small and feature talented and experienced faculty. Program dates are:
•    Session 1: July 6-10
•    Session 2: July 13-17
•    Session 3: July 20-24

Prices for sessions are $495 for one week, $850 for two weeks and $995 for all three weeks. For more information, contact Michael Banach at 718.940.5584 or [email protected].
