SJC President Receives Honorary Degree from St. Francis College

BROOKLYN AND PATCHOGUE, N.Y. May 2, 2011 - St. Josephs College is pleased to announce that President S. Elizabeth A. Hill, C.S.J., J.D. was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, from St. Francis College on Friday, April 29 at its 127th Annual Charter Day Convocation Celebration for her contributions as a leader in higher education and the Brooklyn and Long Island communities as well as her numerous charitable works. She also served as keynote speaker at the event.

"We were honored to have S. Elizabeth Hill, C.S.J. as our keynote speaker for our 127th Annual Charter Day, said St. Francis College President Brendan J. Dugan. "In a room full of experienced Catholic educators, S. Elizabeth stands alone as a successful leader who we all respect and seek to emulate. 

President of St. Josephs College since 1997, S. Elizabeth has received numerous awards over the years in recognition of her dedicated leadership, outstanding service to the community and commitment to the field of education. A three-time recipient of Long Island Business News Top 50 Women award for her consistent record as one of the regions most important and influential women, she was also named a "Woman Sustaining the American Spirit by State Senator Velmanette Montgomery, a "Woman of Distinction by former State Senator Caesar Trunzo and "Person of the Year by Temple Beth El in Patchogue, among her many other notable recognitions.

S. Elizabeth is on the Steering Committee of the Long Island Regional Advisory Council on Higher Education (LIRACHE) and sits on the College of Advisors for ERASE Racism. She is on the Board of Directors of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU), the Independence Community Foundation, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, the Fort Greene Strategic Neighborhood Action Partnership (SNAP) and the Brookhaven Board of Ethics. She is also a member of the Board of Trustees of The Mary Louis Academy and Xaverian High School and the Board of Advisors for Saint Saviour High School.
