SJC Receives Grant from TD Bank Charitable Foundation

July 16, 2012

BROOKLYN, NY July 17, 2012 - St. Josephs College is pleased to announce that it was the recipient of a $15,000 grant from the TD Charitable Foundation, funded by TD Bank, Americas Most Convenient Bank. This grant will be used to enhance and expand the services provided by the Academic Center for Enhancement Services (ACES) Program, which serves high-achieving St. Josephs students on the Brooklyn Campus who speak English as a second language.

Founded in 2000, the ACES program focuses on theme-based teaching, instruction that involves reading a series of works that address the same subject matter. To complement this, ACES students also participate in experiential learning, with students having opportunities to visit museums and historical sites that directly correlate with the theme of study. Through this approach, ACES students gain a fuller experience that enables them to completely appreciate and acclimate to the language, as well as develop their vocabularies quicker due to the commonality of certain words and phrases within the theme.

"As the ACES Academic Program has grown in numbers, in student diversity, and in the range of interests and course themes now encountered as part of the ACES experience, it has become increasingly difficult to afford to take the majority of our ACES students on cultural excursions in the city (museums, plays etc.) that reinforce and build on what we are studying in the classroom, stated Mik Larson, director of the ACES program, St. Josephs College. "This wonderful grant from the TD  Charitable Foundation will make it possible for us to attend more events and visit more institutions, while also allowing additional students to participate."
